Online dating is a big business, and super competitive. The big players in the market include Yahoo Personals, Match.com, Friend Finder Network, etc.
It seems like impossible for guy like you and me to enter the market. But Derek E., a 28 years old guy with $10,000 seed funding, has built a dating sites network and the network runs very well. The network made about 1 million dollar through subscriptions in 2008, growth from 700,000 in 2007.

“I focus on small group of people who share the same interest. I focus on building community instead of only matching. For example, one of my sites is about graphic design. I provide a lot of information about graphic design, and dating tips just for graphic designers. Google seems to love our information and bring the site a decent amount of traffic. About 5% of the visitors finally become our paid members.”
“It’a a totally different feeling of meeting a girl loves graphic design on match.com or meet hundreds of female graphic designer on a graphic design site. That’s why people pay to join our site to meet people.”
It seems like a good business model. How much could the site like this earn?
“Every site in my network makes profit, but not that much. So I should build hundreds of such site to make big money.”
How much cost to run the network?
“I built each site myself, and I use old second hand server and it works fine. The biggest part of the total cost is advertising and 2 part time assistant. I spend about $400,000 on advertising, most is used to pay the affiliate who help selling our membership.”

How A Flash Games Site Makes $3,000 Per Month From Google Adsense

Posted on November 9, 2009

flash game

It’s quite easy to build traffic for a flash games site, especially if you own some games. But it’s not easy to monetize a flash games site as people go to the site to make some fun, they are not searching for information, they have no tendancy to click on the ads. In this case study, we’ll learn how to build traffic for a flash games site and how to increase the click through rate of the ads around the games.
Flash game is the game that players can play on the web with a flash player. Most flash games are casual games, and free to play. There are countless flash games sites in the world. The most popular flash games sites include Kongregate, Addicting Games and Crazy Monkey Games.
A good flash game can attract millions of players in very short time, so the best way to attract players to your games site is own some flash games, even code it with Flash CS yourself, or sponsor other developers’ works, and spread the games over the web. Another way to get games for you site is to copy games from other sites. Mochi Media provides games for webmasters to download without copyright problem.

Jon, a 20 years old web entrepeneur, who own a flash games site 2 years ago and now the site attracts 1 million of  players and make Jon about $3,000 per month with little effort.

He built the site because he love to play flash games and also love to make money. He learnt some basic actionscript and make some games himself, most are silly quizes and IQ tests. Then he submit the games to the flash portals such as Kongregate and Newgrounds. Newgrounds is a very popular flash portal and surprisingly, one of Jon’s quiz games get high votes enough to hit the frontpage of Newgrounds, and traffic start rolling in from the hyperlink in the games.

He also copies other sites’ games without permission. It’s literally illegal, but who care? Every time when he got great games on his site, he invites his friends to play through social network. He has thousands of friends on

MySpace, Facebook, Bebo, Msn, etc. His friends invite their friends to play if they like the games. Such kind of network effect make Jon’s message go viral easily.
Jon said people don’t care where the games original are, they just follow their friends’ link to play and enjoy the games. Some of them love the games and bookmark it so they can come back again.

So how to monetize the traffic?

The main source of income of his site is Google Adsense. He put one 468×60 ad above the games screen and one below the screen. He also put a 160×600 verical banner on the right. He said it is the best ads placement according to his experience.

To increase the value of each click, Jon write the game descriptions, which is on the same page of the games, with high value keywords as much as possible. As google place ads according to the page content, high value keywords always attract high price ads. For example, if a game is about making sandwiches, Jon will descript the game “you are a chef of a 5 star restaurant, and you are going to make some luxury food for…” something like that. Players don’t care what the hell description is about, but

such description attract ads of 5 star restaurants and restaurant coupon sites, such ads make Jon more money than ads about sandwiches.
A large number of flash games players don’t play flash games on flash portal site anymore. They now play casual games on facebook. Jon is going to learn about building facebook and iphone app. He believe he could make more money from it.

Real Case Study Of Making $15,000 By Posting Affiliate Link on Forums Only

Posted on November 7, 2009

Sometimes, you don’t need to have a website to make money online, you can make money by posting affiliate link on the forums only, and this may make you a decent income.
I met John when I worked at Yahoo, he made $15,000 per month without a website. All he did was watched hundreds of forums of any topic all the day. When someone asked for help in the thread, John tried to provide solutions. If there were services or products fill their needs, John posts reply to the threads telling them how their problem could be solved with an affiliate link.
It sound easy, but actually not. First, many forums see affiliate link as “spam”, and will delete the message immediately, or ban your account and IP address. Beside the forum webmaster, members in the forums may not like your ad-like messages too. They’d ignore you, identify you as scam, and don’t buy anything you recommend.
John said you should seem like you are genuienly want to help people to solve their problems. If you just seem like a merchant in the forum community, you can’t sell anything.
John almost sell any kind of things when he see someone need it. One of his main income stream is selling medical-related products and services. He join all the forums and social network sites about illness he could find, he creates different id of each site and claim himself patience, doctor and carer of patience with different id. Sometimes he answers other’s questions, but most of the time he ask questions first and answers it by himself with different id.
Does it work? Yes, it works fine. He live in a big house and drive the newest Porsche 997 Turbo. He said he makes about $15,000 each month and increasing, because he creates new threads everyday, the old threads can still be seen and make him money, this is a good example of passive income.

Zynga Makes 300 Millions From Free Casual Games, So How We Can Make Million From Blog?

Posted on November 5, 2009

freemium

Zynga is a company that develop social games which you can play on facebook and myspace to interact with your friends. They products include Farmville, Mafia War, YoVille!, etc. All the games are free to play, and you can upgrade some features or buy virtual goods by real cash.
Such game companies’ business strategies are quite like a blogger. We offer free product(content), when people got hooked(subscibe to our blog), then start selling premium product to them(such as ebook, e-course, paid membership, etc.).
Some of the real life examples of blogs using this stradegy are Problogger.net, Zen Habits and Seobook, etc. All of them publish free content, and attract tons of subscribers, then offer paid ebooks or e-courses that offer premium content that you can get only after paid.
Seem like a good business strategy that quite easy to apply, but the bad thing is only a small proporation of people will pay after tried your free product, if you want to make more money, you either get a lot more readers, or increase the proportion of paid customers. So how to increase the conversion rate of the paid product offered by your blogs?
1. You should offer high quality free product to attract customer. Write high quality articles take time and effort, and no direct reward, but you can’t sell anything if your free content is not high quality enough because the readers won’t believe they can get high quality paid products.
2. Make people feel addicting to read your blog. Write frequently, keep bringing high value to your readers will make readers come back and come back again. Once the readers become fans, it’s much easier to get them paid.
3. Create unique value for your premium products. If people ask you why should they pay for your products instead of free product, what’s your answer? “The ebook is well organized”, “The e-course offers something I haven’t offered in my blog before” something like that are not the strong reason why should pay. Seobook sell their paid e-courses along with high value seo tools, it’s a good example how a blog ask the readers to pay for the blog’s products.
4. One of the reason to play Zynga Facebook games is to interact with friends. If you readers interact each other in your blog, your blog becomes a community. It’s a good thing as readers who bought your products may promote it to other readers, if your products are good enough.

How To Build A High Traffic Forum In Unethical Way

Posted on November 3, 2009

forum

A successful forum attracts high traffic, and can bring the webmaster good passive income. If the forum is big enough, webmaster can invite active forum members to help them manage the forum, webmaster have little work to do. Quite a good passive income stream, right? But nowaday, almost all topics have been covered by other forum, it’s harder to build a high traffic than before. Is there no chance for new comer? Absolutely no, but require skill, knowledge, luck, effort, and some unethical tricks. Here are the tips of building high traffic forum (both ethical and unethical):
1. Find your niche
Pick a niche that not super competitive and not yet has a big player in the market.
For example, rock music is a competitive topic, if you want to build a forum relate to rock music, maybe you can choose the topic of “heavy metal” or “punk rock” or “progressive rock”. (Ethical)
2. Create ghost members
Join in a forum is fun if there are a lot people in there to discuss something you are interested in. But at the very beginning, nobody sees your forum, so how to invite people to join? If your topic is interesting enough and no other forum like this, people with the same interest may join and help you build up the community. If not, you should build the community yourself. Sign up with hundreds different id, ask questions and answer them yourself with different id, share useful information to attract search engine (by yourself, of course), etc. If there are people start ask questions in the forum, reply them immediately. (a little bit unethical)
3. Post Popular Pirate Files (mp3, movie) For Members to Download
Everyone loves freebie, right? Post free pirate mp3, movies for members to download is an effective way to attract members. People sign up to download what they want, and they may never come back, but at least you connected with them and got their email address.

Posting copyright files is illegal, do it carefully. (unethical)
4. Organize Good Resources For Members To Download
Instead of posting illegal seeds, you can organize and postng free-for-all good resources for members to download. I have a friend who run a forum discuss all the thing related to Wordpress. The members of the forum frequently post threads like “Top 100 Wordpress Theme”, “10 Free Wordpress Tutorial eBook” etc. Such threads are the most viewed threads of his forum. Search engines love the threads of top 100 list, 10 best something too. If your forum has more threads like that, you might probably attract more search engine traffic.
5. Use well established forum software such as vbulletin to build your forum.
Search engine might not crawl the site with bad structure. vBulletin is proven a seo friendly forum software, to lower the risk of denied by search engine. Don’t use the forum building software without good reputation.

Make $1,000 per month by writing for ehow

Posted on November 2, 2009

ehow

ehow

I think most of you have heard ehow, and know some people make money by writting articles for it. How ehow works is you write how-to article for ehow.com, if visitors click on the ads on your page, ehow will share the ad revenue with you.
There are two reasons why write for ehow instead of your own blog:
1. Pagerank of ehow is high, this make ehow articles rank well in google and bring in more organic search traffic.
2. Write for ehow is easy, and you can put all your effort in writing articles. If you build your own blog, there are lots of works to do, including design theme, reply comments, seo, etc.
There are some people share their experience on ehow. Janet Ford, the aurthur of ebook How To Write For Ehow, claim she earn $1,000 from ehow. Pat from smartpassiveincome.com making $150 per month with about 150 articles. John D from ehowexperience.com making $20 per month when he was a total newbie of make money online.
If you want to make money from your ehow articles, your articles should be easily found on google. Here are the tips of writing profitable ehow articles:
1. Pick profitable topics. Topics such as recipe, how to choose a toy for you cat, are the topics that attract low price ads. That means every click of the ads can only make you a few cents. Normally, advertiser pay for high CPC is because the unit price of the products they are promoting is high enough to cover the cost, such as mortgage, loan, etc. Write articles about such things can attract high price ads.
2. Do some keyword research before you write anything. If you write something that no one search for, it’s nothing. You can use google keyword tool and google trends to find out what people are searching.
3. If you want your ehow articles rank well on google, the articles should SEO friendly. You can learn how to write SEO friendly article here.
4. Quantity is king. Don’t expect one ehow article can make you thousands of dollar. In average, a good ehow article can only bring in a few cents to a dollar a month. So, if you want to earn $1,000 per month from ehow, you may need to write 1,000 or more high traffic articles. If you write one article per day, you need 3 years to finish 1,000 articles. If you want to build a passive income stream of $1,000 as soon as possible, you should write 3 or more ehow articles each day, it’s a painful job, especially when you have no idea what should be written.
The good thing of write for ehow is after submitting the posts, you can totally leave them alone and watch you income increase. If you want to know more how other people make money online, please subscribe to our blog.

How To Earn $2,000 Per Month From Amazon Affiliate Program

Posted on November 1, 2009

One of the ways to make residual income online is being an Amazon.com affiliate(also call Amazon Associate).
Some people say it’s not easy to make money from this affiliate program, because the commission rate is low, generally from 4% to 8% per sale, the commission rate rise if you sell more, you can see the calculation here.
I think it’s not a bad deal as being an Amazon affiliate because I know someone making residual income from it. Of course I will show you how in this post, just keep reading.
It’s quite hard to make serious cash by only promoting one merchant’s single product. But the good side of amazon associate program is there are countless products in Amazon for you to choose to promote. From books to furniture, you can choose whatever products that suit your site to promote.
Another advantage of Amazon Associate program is Amazon is the brand your customers can trust. This make it easier to sell things to your readers.
My friend V, who built a website promote “Waterproof iPod Case” sold by Amazon. He earn about $2,000 each month from the site waterproofipodcase.net. All he has to do is find all the waterproof ipod case products in Amazon(it’s only about 20 products there), writes a review for each of them, put the product affiliate banners beside the reviews, and most important, drive traffic to the site. He drive traffic by forum posting and doing SEO of the key phrase “waterproof iPod case”, it’s not a competitive key phrase.
I asked V why he choose waterproof iPod cases to promote, he said he know such product once he read magazine, he think it’s good to promote it to earn commission because it is a high price product($50 in average each case), so the commission is good. Then he do some research using google keyword tools, and get the information that the product has been searched for 60,500 times per month, and there are only a few competitor. Then he go to Godaddy, and surprisingly the domain “waterproofipodcase.net” was still available, because domain name help doing SEO so much, he registered the name immediately although the domain name is a little bit long.
Then he go to the forums of the topic about ipod, swim and gadget. There are quite a lot people asking “how to listen music while swimming” or “Do the waterproof iPod case work?”something like that, he joined all the discussions related to waterproof iPod, and of course, he post keyword rich anchor text link. This help drive traffic to his site and also help SEO.
2 months later, his site ranked number six in google of the keyphrase “warerproof iPod case”, and his site had 200 visitor per day. Conversion rate was high and he sold a few waterproof iPod case everyday.
The site does not exist now, because google deranked the site one day,he couldn’t sell anything without search engine traffic (the traffic from forums is totally useless), he waited for 3 months and the site’s SERP didn’t change, so he move to another project.
$2,000 per month with little cost and effort, worth it? May be you can build lots of such site to make thousands dollar each month. If you want to know more real life case about how other people make money online, please subscribe to our blog.
